Welcome to Rock Over America Magazine, here is the news for February, 2012, and thank you for your continued support, we do this for you.

GWAR News

Not content with five weeks of North American destruction and devastation, mutant overlords GWAR have announced a second leg to their Spring "Return of the World Maggot Tour". This leg kicks off April 13, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas and wraps up April 28, 2012 in Allentown, PA. Support on this leg of the tour will come from Kylesa, Ghoul and Legacy of Disorder.

Tickets for fan club members go on sale tomorrow February 8, 2012 and tickets will go on sale to the general public Friday February 10, 2012 .

"These press releases usually go something like this--", said bellicose front-thing Oderus Urungus. "There is a general statement about what GWAR is up to, then I say something stupid, then it goes to a list of the shows and a bunch of links. That's what's happening right now. We really have to work harder to make these things more interesting."

Oderus adjusted his tie and continued -- "We are finishing this last spate of shows as a tribute to fallen Scumdog Flattus Maximus, and will be playing as a four piece behind the screaming assault of Balsac. In this way we shall give all the US bohabs ample chance to fall to their knees in a sobbing heap when confronted with the reality of Flattus' departure...and a chance to say farewell. Then GWAR can move forward, and we shall."

The first leg of the tour kicks off with a special tribute show for fallen band mate and friend Cory Smoot, AKA Flattus Maximus, in Richmond, VA, at The National Theater on Friday March 16, 2012. All proceeds from the Richmond show will benefit the "Smoot Family Fund" which has been established to help support Cory's widow and their unborn child. Support on this run will come from fellow Richmond metallers Municipal Waste and California's Ghoul. Legacy of Disorder will join the tour on March 20, 2012 in Boston and will run through April 11, 2012 in Fort Collins, CO.

Orion Music + More will feature multiple live music stages plus a lifestyle element that reflects each of Metallica's band members many personal interests.  Metallica will headline both nights of Orion Music + More and play "The Black Album" in its entirety one night Ride The Lightning in its entirety the other.  This will be the only time the band will perform these albums in North America in 2012.   The lineup for Orion Music + More will span multiple musical genres.   From punk to country, over 20 bands will perform, including:  Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold, Modest Mouse, The Gaslight Anthem, Cage The Elephant, Fucked Up, Best Coast, Hot Snakes, Titus Andronicus, Gary Clark Jr., Lucero, Roky Erickson, The Black Angels, The Sword, Liturgy, and more to be announced in the coming weeks.

- A Super Special Price at $125 including all fees for a 2-Day pass OR

- The MET CLUB ULTRA 2-DAY PASS, which includes Front of Stage Viewing Area Access, Exclusive Ultra Lounge Access & More for $225 including all fees!

Red Fang News

Portland, Oregon's RED FANG have confirmed a European headlining tour this April with support coming from label mates BLACK TUSK. The tour kicks off April 5, 23012 in Segrate, Italy and runs through May 5, 2012 in Essen, Germany. Following those dates, RED FANG will head to Russia and Ukraine for three special shows.

RED FANG recently premiered their latest video for "Hank is Dead" directed by Whitey McConnaughy.

The band recorded Murder The Mountains with THE DECEMBERISTS' Chris Funk.  Murder The Mountains is now available on CD, 12" vinyl, and deluxe digital.

Escape The Fate and Attack Attack! News

Two of rock's most talked about bands, Escape the Fate and Attack Attack!, are joining forces on a co-headliner, dubbed the This World Is Ours Tour. The trek, which features support from The Word Alive, Secrets and Mest, will kick off April 5, 2012 in Buffalo, NY and wind down on May 16, 2012 in Vancouver, BC.

Currently the best-selling band on Rise Records, Attack Attack! has toured non-stop over the past 4 years, bringing their insane live show to every corner of the world. Last summer found the band headlining the Vans Warped Tour, marking their 3rd time on the tour.

Attack Attack!'s recently released third album, This Means War, landed at #11 on Billboard's Top 200 Chart in its debut week, proving to critics and naysayers alike that the Ohio band is making an impact on music fans. AllMusic.com calls This Means War, "...their hardest hitting and most coherent record to date." Columbus Alive! describes the record as, "...the sound of Attack Attack! shaking off shackles. Somehow both heavier and poppier, more streamlined yet less boxed-in, it redefines them." The Knoxville News Sentinel raves, "The death-metal, screamo, heavy-rock act rarely hits the brakes, with machine-gun guitar riffs and screeching vocals by Caleb Shomo swarming and suffocating the mix. There's also old-fashioned punk fury racing through this polished, modern metal mayhem, and even traces of funk." Underthegunreview.net says, "This Means War should be acknowledged as a fine album. It's visceral, urgent, and compelling, powered by a passion and intensity so deep-rooted as to be tangible. (It) easily lives up to its name in ambition and scope - from the outset, it's determined to set a radical, vociferous agenda and it pushes itself to hitherto unexplored heights. It's excellently made and a testimony to the band's growth..."

Escape The Fate are currently in the midst of recording a new album, their second with producer John Feldmann (The Used, D.R.U.G.S.). The Las Vegas quartet has toured relentlessly with everyone from Bullet For My Valentine to Hollywood Undead, and in the process has cultivated a diehard following cementing their status as one of hard rocks most intense live acts.

Nominated for a Kerrang! Music Award in the "Best Album" category, Revolver Magazine described the band's most recent self-titled release as, "tread(ing) the tightrope between good times and introspection, between rollicking rock, raging post-hardcore, and tender balladry," and Outburn Magazine declared it, "a compelling modern day masterpiece."

Tickets for the This World Is Ours Tour wil go on sale Friday, February 10, 2012.

A Personal Note from Roger Earl Of Foghat

Hi,

Today is the official release date of our new double Vinyl Recording of  'Last Train Home'.  It is also, sadly, 12 years since the passing of Lonesome Dave. A Blues record is something that Dave and I always wanted to do and we talked about often. It just took a bit longer. I know Dave would have appreciated the vinyl.  He had great respect for old school as do I.

We had a terrific time recording 'Last Train Home' playing some of our favorite blues tunes and also writing some new ones. The CD was released in 2010, so we figured we would run a limited amount of some cool Blue Vinyl Records for the 'vinylistas' out there and hope you enjoy it.  Thanks for the support over the past 40 odd years and Keep on Rockin'.  Roger Earl

OPETH + MASTODON TO TOUR THIS SPRING

CO-HEADLINING "HERITAGE HUNTER TOUR" TO BEGIN IN APRIL AND RUN THROUGH MAY WITH GHOST TO SUPPORT

New York, NY: This is one tour that rock fans will be talking about for years to come and if you miss it, you'll be terribly sorry. Opeth and Mastodon will be embarking on a co-headline tour this spring, which kicks off April 4 in Portland, Maine and runs through May 12 in Atlanta, Georgia. It's the first time these two titans of progressive and forward-thinking hard rock have hit the road together and it's going to be one for the ages. Ghost will serve as the opener of the tour, which has been christened the "Heritage Hunter."

About the tour, Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, in his trademark deadpan wit, stated, "We're touring North America together with Mastodon soon. Nice! One of the very few metal bands of today that I genuinely like. Good people too!  Ghost are coming with us as well, and they are one of the hottest new bands to come out of Sweden in recent years, and I dig them too. I sound like an old fart, don't I? Well, I am."

He continued, "Yet, am I right in thinking that this tour, this line up, is pretty decent? Would you all agree? Not complete s---, is it? Hope to see y'all out there! What are we playing? Not sure yet, but considering the company, maybe we'll have to pull out the big guns from time to time. In order to keep up, I mean."

Opeth released Heritage in September 2011, garnering critical acclaim from Rolling Stone ("a career record that reimagines prog as actual rock 'n' roll"), Pitchfork ("a pretty, well thought out collection"), AV Club ("wholly absorbing"), Decibel (which featured the band on the cover, which has become a tradition for the band and the magazine), PopMatters ("Opeth still continues to make especially phenomenal music") and more.

Dates for this momentous trek are as follows. Pre-sale ticketing begins on February 1, with public on sales to follow on February 3.

JETHRO TULL'S IAN ANDERSON TO RELEASE 'THICK AS A BRICK 2'

Anderson Announces 40th Anniversary Sequel to the
Hugely Successful, Groundbreaking 1972 Album

London, England - February 1, 2012
- Following the recent announcement of a 19-date tour to commemorate the 40th anniversary of 'Thick As A Brick,' on April 2nd (April 3rd in North America) Ian Anderson will release a sequel to the original album.

In 1972, Ian Anderson wrote and recorded the Jethro Tull Progressive Rock classic album 'Thick As A Brick.' The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age.  The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world.

So, forty years on, what would Gerald Bostock - aged fifty in 2012 - be doing today? What might have befallen him? The anniversary "part two" album will examine the possible different paths that the precocious young schoolboy, Gerald Bostock, might have taken later in life through alter-ego characters with song-section identities illustrating the hugely varied potential twists and turns of fate and opportunity. Not just for Gerald but to echo how our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time.

Ian Anderson says of the album, "As we baby-boomers look back on our own lives, we must often feel an occasional 'what-if' moment. Might we, like Gerald, have become instead preacher, soldier, down-and-out, shopkeeper or finance tycoon?"  Adding, "And those of more tender years - the social media and internet generation - may choose to ponder well the myriad of chance possibilities ahead of them at every turn....."

To coincide with this groundbreaking release, for the first time since 1972, Anderson and fellow musicians John O'Hara (keyboards), David Goodier (bass), Florian Opahle (guitar) and Scott Hammond (drums) - as well as some guest performers - will take to the road to perform the album in its entirety and, it can now exclusively be revealed that, in addition, there will be a second part to the show where Anderson and the band will also perform the sequel.

'Thick As A Brick 2' will be released as a standard jewel case CD and digital download, and in a Special Edition 2-disc package with DVD featuring 5.1 stereo mixes, 24-bit stereo mix, video of the making of the album, interviews with the musicians and Ian Anderson reading the lyrics in various locations.

After 44 years of leading Tull to 54 countries worldwide and over 60 million albums sold, Ian Anderson celebrates a true progressive rock classic with old and new fans across the UK for a whole three weeks. Anderson is known as the flute and voice of the legendary Jethro Tull, formed in the North of England in 1968 from the amalgamation of blues-based John Evan Band and McGregor's Engine. Since their first performance at London's famous Marquee Club in 1968, the band has released 30 studio and live albums and earned a prominent place in rock history.

Cult News

One of the finest British rock acts to have enjoyed worldwide success over the last few decades, The Cult has wrapped up recording Choice of Weapon, the group's first studio album in five years. The album is set for a May 22, 2012 U.S. release on the band's new label Cooking Vinyl, and its 10 tracks reveal the band at its rawest and most visceral, encapsulating cinematic visions and themes of love, revolt, and redemption.

Choice of Weapon is the follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2007 release Born Into This that the UK's Mojo magazine called "a wholehearted, utopian and irrefutably exciting record." Long-time Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush), who produced one of The Cult's most successful albums, the Platinum-certified Sonic Temple, put the finishing touches on the foundations that were laid by co-producer Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E., Masters of Reality).

The album was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert, and the band's Witch Mountain studio between July and December 2011. The new release features founding members Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, with drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris Wyse. "We have had the opportunity to work with two of the most influential and talented producers in the world today," said Astbury. "They pushed us beyond our comfort zone, and helped us craft 'Choice of Weapon.'"

Choice of Weapon is aimed at the heart of The Cult's loyal following. It reflects the current discontent and destruction of our eco systems, the search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives. "We went deeper . . . we worked a bit harder on this record. We have great fans and they deserve our best," added Duffy, "and I feel this is as strong as any album we have ever released.

The Cult is working on film and graphic elements to accompany the album's release, and plans are being confirmed for the band's 2012 World Tour.

Black Country Communion to Release Rip-Roaring Double Concert CD "Live Over Europe" on February 28, 2012

BCC to go back into the studio for third record this Summer

Los Angeles, CA, January, 31, 2012: Black Country Communion, the English-American rock band featuring the talents of bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze, Black Sabbath), blues rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), will release their first concert CD Live Over Europe on February 28, 2012 on the J&R Adventures imprint. This 2-disc CD follows up the October 2011 release of the 2-disc DVD by the same name.

Recently named by Eddie Trunk and co-hosts as "Best New Band of the Last 10 Years" on VH1 Classic's That Metal Show, BCC taped Live Over Europe during its debut tour in the summer of 2011. On the album, the band blazes through 17 tracks, recorded in surround over three nights, playing to packed venues in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. The set list includes songs from both of BCC's albums - 2010's self-titled debut and 2011's sophomore release 2 - including "Black Country," "One Last Soul," "Save Me," "Man In The Middle," "Cold," and "Song of Yesterday." Also included in the mix is "The Ballad Of John Henry," from Bonamassa's 2009 solo album and the Deep Purple classic "Burn."

Producer Kevin Shirley explains, "We saw that this live act could be an awesome force of nature to behold; one that promised legendary performances like those of our heroes of Classic Rock. The plan was to get them out there for the entire world to hear. Records allow a certain musical finesse, but live performance promises so much in the very transient nature of a gig; chances are taken, boundaries are crossed and the most exciting performances explode. Two studio albums built a repertoire big enough for a full concert which allowed us to unleash the monster for all the world to see and feel."

Guitar World named BCC's 2 as #12 in their Top 50 Albums of 2011. In November, BCC scooped up the Breakthrough Award at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards. ClassicRockRevisited.com called BCC the "Great Last Hope for Classic Hard Rock."

BCC debut tour took the band around the world, playing to cities in North America and Europe. On June 10, at Anaheim, CA's Grove of Anaheim, The Orange County Register exclaimed, "The four members of BCC truly recast the heavy rock of the '60s and '70s and yank it into the 21st century as well as anyone in recent memory."

February 2012

This month's column is by me, and I have some food for thought.

The Power Of Music....is an amazing thing.  Do you remember the first song you ever heard on the radio?  Not the songs your parents or brothers or sisters were playing, but that first song that you heard on your own that you really dug, and that really delved deep down into your soul and grabbed hold of you and wouldn't let you go?  That song you, if I had to lay a bet, you still remember to this day.  We all have that one song and to this day it still brings memories to us, mostly good.  For me, I have to mention two songs, because I can't remember which I heard first, but they both released around the same time.

In 1975, when I was 8 years old, that summer two big songs debuted on the radio that would forever impact me, mold me musically, and change my life forever.  One was by The Captain and Tennille, "Love Will Keep Us Together" (the Captain by the way is none other than Daryl Dragon who previous to this had played in The Beach Boys) and the other song was "Katmandu" by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band.  To me, at 8 years old, there was an energy to each song that stuck.  Definitely not my parent's music, to say the least.  They liked the Captain and Tennille song sure, but the other, uhm no, lol.  I was around this same time also beginning to listen to a little AM station out of the Detroit area, WHND 560 AM, affectionately known to all the listeners as Honey Radio.  The DJs had that Wolfman Jack and Alan Freed quality to them, and from this point on that was all she wrote, as far as I was concerned.  I was 8 years old and I had fallen for my first true love, and her name was Rock-N-Roll.

Chuck Berry and Haley's Comets led into others like Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and from here I got into Motown and Old School Soul like James Brown, Aretha and the "Wicked, Wicked" Wilson Pickett.  Enter the Beach Boys and every surf band I could find, and I was only 10 by this time.  From here it led to Billy Joel's 'Glass Houses', Martha and The Muffins and their hit "Echo Beach", plus in between we had The Rockets who were "Rollin' By The Record Machine" and that made me "Turn Up The Radio" even louder.  Ted Nugent with "Wango Tango", Kim Carnes with "Betty Davis Eyes", Pat Benatar, The Who, The Kingbees with "My Mistake", The Clash, The GoGos, and then came Randy Rhoades, and again the road changed for me.  This was one baby step away from Motley Crue and Def Leppard which led straight into Twisted Sister, and from there, as Saxon would sing, "The dam began to burst" and Metal would forever become a part of my life.  I remember DJs such as Doug Podell, The Poobah at WRIF, and then there was The Electrifying Mojo, the Motor City DJ who took a no holds barred approach to music.  From here add in 'Metal Shop' with Charlie Kendall every week, MTV and Friday Night Videos, and the game again changed.

With all that said, I am now a bit older and I have a very wide and very eclectic music collection.  Everything from Punk, to Jazz, to Blues, Rock, Old School Soul, Funk, and so much more. But I still love the music I first fell in love with and grew up listening to.  I never cared if anyone else thought it was cool, I listened because I loved it and that was all that mattered, as far as I was concerned.  So dust off those old records or cassettes or go on YouTube and find that first song you fell in love with and remember again why you loved music so much.  Maybe you will rekindle a love affair with something very special to you too. To quote the man who first said this, "There are only two kinds of music....good and bad."  To quote one of my favorite Rock songs..."Long Live Rock....be it dead or alive"!!!
